vista longhorn interim

Vista = Longhorn Interim

Ironic that way back a few years ago MS said firmly that they won't release an interim version of Windows before Longhorn...
Well, with so many features cut out of Longhorn, especially WinFS and the new notification mechanism (watch the Longhorn Concept Demos for this feature), Windows Vista really is the interim build of Longhorn.
That means the real Longhorn will now become Windows Blackcomb/Vienna, and it will take another 3 years (expect more) for them to clean up the mess.
This should make Vista the longest interim Windows build to make yet...
P.S. WinFS is what defined Longhorn, cut it and it's not Longhorn anymore. I've seen so many people confused WinFS with metadata, but its way more than that. Everytime I watch the Longhorn Concept Videos I am so damned to have this unified storage where all my contacts are stored once and are used in all programs. No sync, no duplicates, no hassles. No amount of Aero Glass eye-candy can make up for that...

This is old stuff.

No, people are confusing winfs with a new file system to take over NTFS... it was never a new file system, it was just a database scheme to make search/managing much easier. What they did find, was the sql version of server2003 which is pretty much what vista uses now is just as efficient for the mean time. We still may see winfs one day but if that's the only reason you want vista over the new security, driver foundation (aka no kernal mode drivers), video foundation, then "Oh well".

Hi,
I do want the other innovations that you mentioned but thing is without WinFS, the OS just isn't what it used to be...
I suggest you take a look at these video clips, I think they will be of interest to you...

The possibilities of WinFS are just amazing...
